In December 2000, the Australian Government formally endorsed auDA as the appropriate body to administer the .au domain space. The Government holds reserve powers in relation to domain names. auDA is responsible for appointing and authorising Domain Registrars for the .au top level domain (.com.au, .net.au, .org.au, .asn.au and more).
A Domain Name Registrar is a company authorised and appointed by auDA to provide services to individuals, companies and organisation that need to
- register a new Australian domain name
- renew their existing domain name
- make changes to their domain name record
An accredited Domain Registrar operates under a Registrar Agreement with auDA and a Registry-Registrar Agreement with AusRegistry, the business unit that built and operated the Registry System in Australia under the supervision of auDa, the policy authority and industry self-regulatory body for the .au domain space. The most recent data from AusRegistry confirms that there are over 880,00 .au domains registered, 85% of which are .com.au with .net.au representing only 8% and .org.au, .asn.au and .id.au making up the balance.
The registrar of record for a domain name is the auDA-accredited registrar who is responsible for managing a particular domain name. Only the registrar of record is able to renew, modify or re-delegate an existing domain name.
